Refractive surgery
Refractive errors are eye conditions that can be permanently treated. There are basically two types of treatment: laser and surgical.
Excimer laser therapy is indicated for mild to moderate refractive errors, up to approximately 8 diopters. Surgical treatment is indicated for severe refractive errors, usually over 8 diopters. This latter involves implanting an artificial lens made of biocompatible material (ICL) behind the iris, through a small incision of approximately 2.4 mm in the peripheral part of the cornea. This lens eliminates the refractive error, and visual recovery is very rapid. Furthermore, the procedure is reversible, and if, for any reason, the implanted lens needs to be removed, this can be done without any particular problems.
